Something Eternal in the Sky

When I’m thinking, when I’m out walking, when I’m feeling low, I always end up looking at the sky.

“I like to imagine there’s something eternal in the sky, like stars in motion.”

I read that before bed, and I started picturing things. Dust falling through dappled light. Waves hitting rock and breaking into a thousand flowers. Leaves rustling right by my ear. A cat’s chest, rising and falling, slow, with each breath.

All these small things that repeat and keep their own order are like the countless stars out there. They look scattered, but each one moves to some kind of rhythm, giving off light in the dark.

Quietly watching these patterns, out in the world or deep inside myself, feels like living through something sacred.
